What are the  hot breakthroughs in Plastic Surgery 2011?

Plastic surgery is helping more people than ever to look and feel great. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports in its latest study that 13.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010, that’s a 5% increase from 2009.  Each year plastic surgeons from around the country meet at the ASPS annual convention to  discuss these statistics and talk about new cutting-edge technology and plastic surgery procedures.
Topping the list, is non-surgical fat removal. The procedure requires very little, if any downtime and no incision. There are several new technologies that are being used for this treatment including light energy, radio frequency energy, and ultrasound technology. Dr. Bruce Van Natta, a board certified plastic surgeon and medical advisory member for ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com says, these techniques work best for patients who only have a small amount of unwanted fat and don’t want to deal with the down-time of healing that’s normally involved in traditional liposuction procedures.
Number two on the list of new cosmetic breakthroughs is the new wrinkle reducer,  Xeomin. Xeomin has been recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and will compete with the earlier FDA approved toxins, Botox and Dysport. Board certified plastic surgeon and a leading authority in facial rejuvenation, Dr. Paul Lorenc, says the introduction of new toxins gives doctors more choices and says this means better results for patients.
Number three is total eye rejuvenation. This technique is a multi-step process rolled into one. The first step is making over the top and bottom eyelids by taking out excess skin and tightening up the skin that is left. The next two steps uses a neurotoxin for frown lines around the eyes and a topical eyelash treatment to grow longer lashes.  Dr. Patrick Sullivan, a board certified plastic surgeon with ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com says, “The ideal candidate is someone who starts to see some thinning of their eyelashes, or maybe those eleven signs between their brow, or people who come in with sad appearing eyes, or people who tell them they are looking tired when they’re not. Those are the people who can really benefit from this.”
Next, at number four is a new breast augmentation procedure involving fat grafting. Surgeons are now taking fat from a particular spot in the patient’s body where it’s not wanted and placing it around the implant.  Dr. Lou Bucky, a board certified plastic surgeon says, the fat can be sculpted and shaped around the implant giving the patient a much more natural look and feel. Dr. Bucky, who sits on the medical advisory board for ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com says, this procedure works particularly well for the woman who would like to be a bit bigger, but has thin tissue in the breast area.
And finally, rounding off the list of the top five procedures is 3-D Imaging. Patients who go in for a plastic surgery consultation involving the breasts or the face can see a computer generated, realistic image of what they’ll look like in 3-dimension.  President and Chief Medical Officer for ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com, William P Adams Jr MD says this relieves a lot of the anxiety most patients feel when trying to communicate what they want to look like.
With any new cosmetic procedure, these doctors recommend that anyone interested in plastic surgery to be sure and consult with a board certified plastic surgeon before making any decisions. As the popularity of these enhancements increase, the more important it becomes to seek out a surgeon with experience to ensure the best results and a healthy recovery.
