In this episode, the experts the continuing saga of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a cancer-like disease affecting a small number of breast augmentation patients. The plastic surgery community the world over is actively researching and analyzing data to help better understand the very rare condition. While patients are certainly concerned, it’s important to understand that the risk of acquiring BIA-ALCL is very low; current estimates put the lowest threshold at 1 in 4000 patients.
Additionally, the NSL panel takes another look at the idea of implants in the buttocks – a procedure that has largely gone the wayside in favor of fat grafting to the buttock. While itself also a topic of controversy, the results experienced surgeons are finding with fat grafting is certainly worth comparing to classic buttock augmentation with implants.
