Breast Lift and Implants, All in One Procedure

The most sought after plastic surgery in the United States? Liposuction and breast augmentation. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports breast augmentation took the number two slot in the most performed plastic surgery procedures in 2013. Breasts sagging due to past pregnancies, nursing and aging can often require two procedures; a breast lift and a breast augmentation. However, a one stage mastopexy, when appropriate, can accomplish both procedures at once, which can save the patient recovery time and money.

Having a one stage mastopexy (a breast lift combined with implants) means fewer surgical procedures for the patient, yet its efficacy is still being debated, according to studies by ASAPS.

Richard Zienowicz, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon in Rhode Island, has experienced great success at his practice by lifting the breast and increasing breast projection with the dual procedure. This allows the patient to have everything done at one setting, eliminating an additional procedure months later.

Why breasts sag

Sagging breasts can be a source of frustration for women. Greater skin elasticity, size, and density of breast tissue contribute to breast fullness creating a “lifted” youthful appearance.Through aging, elasticity is lost. Add childbirth into the equation and the appearance of your breast can be completely altered. Women who are dissatisfied with the downward migration of their breasts may want to consider procedures to rejuvenate and bring about a younger look.

Am I the right candidate for a dual procedure (one-stage mastectomy)?

With small implants, a minimal lift, and good skin elasticity, a one stage mastopexy is a low risk procedure. Also, when women need minimal nipple re-positioning, a one stage mastopexy can be very effective.

When large implants, a full anchor lift, and thin skin are involved, most board certified plastic surgeons would typically perform the procedure in two stages for better results. In massive weight loss patients, a two stage mastopexy would carry the least complications.

Studies published by ASAPS have concluded that with a skilled surgeon and proper patient selection, the combined augmentation mastopexy procedure can be safe and effective.

“It’s paying attention to detail and safety,” says Dr. Zienowicz. “At our practice our goal is to make sure there aren’t complications.”

What is the recovery time frame and is the procedure painful?

“Mastopexy is not a painful procedure,” says Zienowicz. “However, if we are using a large implant which stretches the muscle, the procedure can be a bit more uncomfortable.” It is often possible to return to work within a week or so, depending on your job. You should avoid excessive physical activity for at least the first two weeks following surgery.
