Buttock augmentation is booming – with plastic surgeons noticing a huge increase in the procedure in just the past year. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), buttock augmentation and labiaplasty took the top spots for the most significant increases in number of procedures performed, over the course of a one year period.

The procedure is so mainstream, ASAPS reports a 58% increase in the number of procedures in 2013 compared to 2012. Dr. Daniel Del Vecchio, a board certified plastic surgeon in Boston says 70 percent of all plastic surgeons are now doing buttock augmentation. Dr. Del Vecchio has written books and lectured all over the world. He is considered the expert in fat grafting. “The buttock is now considered one of the most erogenous parts of a woman’s body,” says Del Vecchio. “And that sentiment is being played out in our culture, whether it’s through television or magazines; it’s the new thing in plastic surgery.”
Fat Is Used to Recontour The Body
Buttock Augmentation can actually serve two purposes. If you have fat in unwanted parts of your body, your surgeon can remove that fat, harvest it, and then redistribute it to your buttock to make it rounder and fuller. Using a person’s body fat (instead of an implant) actually reduces risk and is considered ‘standard operating procedure’ when it comes to butt augmentation.
Who Are Buttock Augmentation Candidates?
There is really no particular age group opting for buttock augmentation, however in years past there was a specific demographic. For example, the procedure has always trended high in populations close to the equator. Now the procedure is quickly gaining ground globally and is particularly popular in the US.
You don’t need to be overweight or carry extra body fat to have the procedure. Thin women are actually told to gain weight and then that extra fat that accumulates throughout the body can be used to reshape the buttock. Dr. Del Vecchio says anyone who is in good health, has a flat or square buttock and desire more curves are great candidates. Additionally, anyone who perceives an imbalance between their buttocks and the rest of their body, or those who lack curves commonly seek consultations. Due to the invasive nature of the procedure it’s recommended that patients look for a board certified plastic surgeon to reduce risks in the operating room.
Recovery And Comfort Level Following Augmentation
Those who work office jobs may notice the most discomfort. Patients are really not supposed to sit for three weeks. To ease the discomfort there are some cushions and other devices that can be used to make sitting more tolerable. Those opting for fat transfer augmentations, rather than implants will experience a faster recovery.
