Lose the fat without the pain – A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon explains non-surgical fat removal using ultrasound technology. Dr. Peter Fodor, a board certified plastic surgeon says there are several types of non-surgical fat removal procedures on the market, but one in particular seems to work exceptionally well on patients who have a small pocket of stubborn fat.

What is VASER Shape?
VASER Shape is a body contouring procedure that selectively removes unwanted body fat by using ultrasound energy that penetrates through the skin and melts the fatty tissue. “The reason this can be done with almost any kind of energy is fat cells are more fragile than any other cell in our bodies, so therefore nerves, blood vessels and lymphatic cells are not destroyed,” says Dr. Fodor.
VASER Shape is performed by applying a transducer, which looks like a flat plate, onto the skin. By moving the hand piece over a patient’s body, a physician can treat the tissue layer that is one to five centimeters below the surface of the skin.
How does VASER Shape work?
“The fat cells are altered to the point that the body no longer recognizes them as part of the body’s tissue. The body absorbs the cells and they are eliminated through the natural elimination process. As a general rule, you get about one inch of circumferential reduction after each treatment.”
What is the future of non-surgical fat removal?
“Body sculpting methodologies that are performed by doing injections on a particular body part are new and on the horizon. This is very exciting and being researched as we speak and will probably be available in the near future.” It is based on injecting materials that our bodies naturally make. For example, when you digest some fatty food, our body puts out bile into our intestine. One component of bile is sodium deoxycholate. Normally this compound doesn’t work against our own fat, but when it is injected into our subcutaneous tissue or fatty tissue, it will destroy the fat cells without destroying disturbing any other cells.”
How do these new methods compare to traditional liposuction?
“I doubt that energy based or injection based technologies in the near future will replace traditional liposuction, however they will work for the patient who has a small pouch of fat, or for older patients who are not good candidates for surgery. Also, these non-surgical procedures can work very well for patients who have had liposuction but have been left with some surface irregularities after the procedure.”
