Does Where You Live Determine Breast Implant Size?

Is there a correlation to where a woman lives and what size breast implants she chooses? Dr. Jason Pozner of Boca Raton, Florida and Dr. James Namnoum of Atlanta sit down to debate whether or not your geographic location has an impact on your breasts.

Do women who live near the beach want bigger breasts than a woman who lives in the mountains?  Dr. Pozner says living in Florida he finds that more women want bigger breasts. “When you wear less clothes, you’re more concerned with the look of your body. I see why women would want bigger breasts if they are going to be in a bikini often.”

Is the bikini driving larger breasts, or surgeons?

While patients may have an idea of the size of breasts they’d like to have, not everyone can get exactly what they want if they want a successful surgery with fewer complications. Fitting an implant to a patient’s body type and breast tissue play an important role in preventing complications. “I think a lot of the bigger implants in certain areas are surgeon driven,” says Dr. Namnoum. “I see women with implants that really don’t fit, and they should have been given smaller implants if the surgeon had properly served his patient in order to get the best results.”

“I don’t think they’re surgeon driven, I think their bikini driven,” responds Pozner. “Florida, Texas, California, even Vegas, women wear less clothing, whether it be at the beach or the pool, and want their breasts to look great.”

Choosing an implant size involves more than a patient’s desire

One point both doctors agree on, is that a lot of factors need to be assessed by a board certified plastic surgeon when choosing an implant. “Picking an implant is not a simple process,” says Namnoum. “You and I both want to put in implants that look the most natural and fit the patient best, even if they want to have large breasts.” The health of the patient’s tissue, the chest measurements and the different types of implants all come together to produce the best possible outcome for patients.

Pozner says he believes woman’s breast implants in colder climates are generally smaller than they are near the coasts and that could mean that the patients with larger breasts on the coasts have more complications due to their implant size.   “Whether or not there is a correlation, I tend to think women simply want bigger breasts in areas where people wear less clothes.”
